I have had no better fishing experience than being guided on the San Juan River by John Tavenner.
I have been an avid fly fisherman for the past 5 years working hard to learn the sport and think like a trout.
During that period I have been fortunate enough to have John as my guide on 4 trips.
They may be fishing toward the head of the run with dry flies or nymphs or fishing downstream with nymphs, streamers, or dry flies.
Anglers joining the first angler should fish behind the first angler, fishing water that the first angler has already fished.
Or they should fish other water that the first angler cannot cover- without infringing on water the first angler is planning to fish.
You will find that most of the fish on the San Juan eat in the middle of the water column.
This is between 2-5 feet deep.
Because there is so much food drifting downstream, the fish can see everything from the top to near the bottom while they hold in the middle of the water column.
