The most common color is dark blue, almost black on the dorsal surface and upper sides, shading to white on the lower portions of the body. Usually, several vertical stripes are noticeable, and sometimes these are quite vivid. Coloration varies a great deal. Size alone is often the obvious identifying feature, but confusion can arise when comparing juvenile Blue Marlin to White Marlin, Spearfish and the illusory Hatchet Marlin. The feature that distinguishes the Blue from the White and Hatchet Marlins is the pointed dorsal fin that curves sharply downward.
